Shirley Roper obituary

Visitation for family and friends of Shirley M. “Grandma” Roper of Grass Valley will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary. Memorial services will follow at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary. Burial will take place at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City. Pastor Andy Owens will officiate the services.

Mrs. Roper died Sunday, May 21, in Grass Valley. She was 83.

She was born Aug. 21, 1922, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Owen Joseph and Jimmy K. Stroud. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945. She married Bert Roper in 1947, in California. She worked for J.W. Robinson. She enjoyed reading, tanning, and shopping.



She is survived by her sons Steven C. Roper of Pasadena, and Gary L. Roper of Southern California; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Larry Mello of Grass Valley; grandchildren Kim Malarae, Lore Reynolds-Hamilton, Tim Mello, Michelle McCune, Stephanie Mello, Devin Roper, and Cortlin Roper; great-grandchildren Baylee, Blake, Kyler, Kalli, Taylor, Ryan and Chase. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Roper in 1999; and grandson, Ryan Mello in 1995.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
