School policies on physical activity and nutrition

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity has developed a set of Model Local School Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition to assist local school districts as they write and implement wellness policies consistent with the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004.

Sixty health, nutrition, physical activity and education organizations worked together to create model school wellness policies.

As a parent, you can work with your school district to use these tools to help your school promote physical activity and nutrition and to minimize childhood obesity. Actions you can take:

• Share information about the model school wellness policies with other parents, teachers and administrators via e-mail messages and newsletters.

• Ask parents’ organizations, teacher and administrators to commit to implementing school wellness policies.

• Put the school wellness policies issue on the agenda at school meetings or conferences to inform others and encourage involvement.
