School basketball accident injures five

A retractable basketball backboard and hoop collapsed at the Chicago Park School multipurpose room Tuesday, injuring four students and a part-time employee.

All four students are back at school today, and the employee who was flown by air ambulance to Sutter-Roseville Medical Center is in good condition, according to Superintendent-Principal Dan Zeisler. He would not release the names of the injured without their permission.

“It could have been much more severe,” Zeisler said. “A couple of kids were hanging on a support earlier and were told to jump down and then it crashed” at about 1:45 p.m.

Zeisler said the students could not have weighed more than 200 pounds together, and that’s what has school officials baffled.

“It even had support chains, but everything failed and that why it’s being investigated,” Zeisler said. The apparatus was removed from the building and the school’s insurance company will investigate the situation.
