Scam targets Citizens Bank of Nevada County customers

A fraudulent e-mail message soliciting personal and debit card information from customers of Citizens Bank of Nevada County has surfaced in the last week, bank officials warned Thursday.

The message also informs recipients that the bank requires all customers to activate bill pay functions by responding to the e-mail.

“We will never request personal or account information through an unsolicited e-mail communication, telephone inquiry or any other form of unsolicited communication with bank customers,” said Michael Behn, senior vice president/chief information officer of the bank

He added that such requests are “highly suspect and should be considered an attempted compromise. Anyone who received this type of unsolicited e-mail communication should certainly not respond with any personal information and should delete the e-mail.”

Behn said this attempt to steal depositors’ identity first surfaced several months ago in the northeast United States, targeting customers of a Citizens Bank in that area. Behn urged anybody who receives the e-mail to contact the bank.
