SB 840 would save thousands of lives in California

Perhaps that “same government authority” Mr. Shelving, a letter writer, speaks of, the same government that vetoed SB 840 in 2006, should be recalled if he, Arnold Schwarzenegger, continues with the myopic thinking that has produced the current skyrocketing costs of health care for less and less coverage.

The annual death figures in California due to lack of health insurance are 3,100, according to the Families USA report.

This figure does not include the uncounted thousands who can’t get life-saving procedures because insurance companies will not approve new or costly treatment.

And now that the governor wants to cut even more procedures from being insured to save money, the death count is going to soar.

Without SB 840, the one-payer insurance, it won’t matter if we have health insurance plans, especially over the age of 65, because next to nothing will be covered.

According to a report released by Health Access California, the proposed restrictions on public health insurance programs, including tighter eligibility rules, could increase the number of uninsured residents in the state from 3.5 million to more than 7.5 million over three years.

SB 840 would save lives and that should be the most important factor of all.
