Sand bags available for flood control

The storms that slammed into western Nevada County Monday night and Tuesday morning are expected to weaken the rest of the day today with less rain and runoff making flooding less likely.

Those fearing high water can get fill-your-own sandbags at the county yard at 12548 Loma Rica Drive in Grass Valley until 5 p.m. Bring your own shovel and there is a 100-bag limit.

Sandbags are also available for Grass Valley residents only at the city yard at 556A Freeman Lane. In Truckee, sandbags are still available at the fire station at 10049 Donner Pass Road.

The National Weather Service Tuesday morning said there will be scattered thunderstorms and showers throughout the day and night as the newest and weaker system passes through the Sierra. Runoff is expected to be less than Monday and the colder storm will bring snow levels down to 3,000 feet, which will also slow runoff.
