Ruth Woodbury

Ruth E. Woodbury died July 5 in Seattle, Wash. She was 85.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Mrs. Woodbury was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Loma Linda to James R. and Elizabeth Montigel, and grew up in Yucaipa. While attending the University of Redlands, she met first lieutenant Charles M. Woodbury, Jr., a B-24 pilot with the Eighth Air Force. They married in 1945 and lived in West Covina, where they raised three children. In 1964, they moved to Grass Valley, where they owned and operated the Holiday Liquor store for 20 years before retiring.

Mrs. Woodbury was an avid reader and baseball fan. Her greatest joy came from being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After retiring, she enjoyed playing bridge with friends, and traveling both abroad and in the U.S. with Mr. Woodbury in their motorhome. In February 2008, after the death of Mr. Woodbury, she moved from Grass Valley to Edmonds, Wash., to live with her older son Charles and daughter Judith.

She is survived by her children, Charles of Edmonds, Wash., Judith of Lynnwood, Wash., and Ross of Grass Valley; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made the American Heart Association or another charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Beck’s Mortuary in Edmonds, Wash., and Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.
