Russian acting troupe stars in Chekhov drama

Carol Feineman

As Foothill Theatre Company representatives in Nevada City and Maxim Gorky Theatre representatives from Vladivostok, Russia continue their cultural exchange efforts this week, Nevada City audiences will win as a consequence.

That’s because Maxim Gorky Theatre’s troupe members will perform “Ivanov” in their native language at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City tonight through Sunday, marking the first time that an entire production has been transported from the Russian theater to Nevada County.

During the past decade, Foothill Theatre Company and Maxim Gorky Theatre actors, directors, designers and playwrights have periodically visited each other’s theaters to work together on productions.

Foothill Theatre Company will present the troupe’s performances with simultaneous English translation transmitted via headphones.

“Ivanov,” Anton Chekhov’s first full-length play, is about Nikolai Ivanov, a non-Jew who defied society of those times by marrying a Jewish woman, convinced that he could live on love alone and change the world by doing so.

With middle-age fast approaching, his love has cooled and Ivanov re-examines his desires, haunted by what he has done and even more by the things he hasn’t accomplished.

Although Chekhov portrayed Ivanov as a typical Russian intellectual in the beginning of the 20th century, Chekhov captured feelings and attitudes universal to men today wrestling with mid-life crises.

Eight actors, one technician and the director from “Ivanov” have been awarded the national “Honored Artist of Russia;” one actor has been named a “People’s Artist of Russia” which is the highest rank given for a distinguished body of work in that country, according to Foothill Theatre Company representatives.
