Four high school students representing the four Rotary Clubs in Western Nevada County competed in the annual Rotary Speech Contest at Miners Foundry Cultural Center on April 9.

Their topic was Rotary International’s theme this year, “Mankind is Our Business.” Bear River High School students David Payne and Dustin Spence and Nevada Union High’s Natalie Gonzales and Natalie Russell competed by speaking before 200 Rotarians and guests.

When the speeches were over, careful scoring by veteran Toastmaster members awarded first place and $200 to Russell. Second place and $100 went to Gonzales, third place and $75 went to Payne, and fourth place and $50 was awarded to Spence.

This year’s contest chairwoman was Andrea Covert of Grass Valley Rotary. Each of the 11 areas that make up Rotary District 5190 will send winners to Rotary’s District Conference in Sparks, Nev., in early May, where they will compete for a $1,000 first-place scholarship.

Rotary Clubs of Area 4 consist of Grass Valley, Nevada City, 49er Breakfast Club of Nevada City and Penn Valley. All 11 areas include 46 clubs in Northern California and northern Nevada.
