Rough and Ready Fire Department to break ground on new station

The volunteer Rough and Ready Fire Department will break ground for its long-awaited new fire station at 11:30 a.m. Friday, after raising $900,000 of its own funds.

The 8,000-square-foot building has been in the works for 15 years and will finally come to life, thanks in part to a $1.1 million ARRA grant.

The department has been raising funds for years in hopes of replacing its current station, which is small, outdated and off the beaten path. Federal stimulus money is contributing to the project, but also added extra layers of regulation and review. The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently approved the plans and environmental aspects of the project.

The new fire station will be located at 14506 Rough and Ready Highway, a much more central location that will better serve the community. The station will have sleeping and staffing quarters, amenities the current station does not have. The new training room will be twice the size of the existing facility and will be able to accommodate all 18 staff members.
