Rock concert photos on exhibit

Marysville photographer Oscar Leatherman’s “No Members Only” exhibit up through February at Cafe Mekka includes concert photos of JoPhoto:625480,left;ni Mitchell, Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Frank Zappa and Carlos Santana, along with nature photos.

Leatherman has taken photos since 1976, when he bought his first 35-millimeter camera in a divorce sale. Self-taught, he learned “by making plenty of mistakes.”

“Good photography has a lot to do with opportunity, imagination, timing, luck, the mood of a higher power as well as some knowledge about how to point and shoot,” Leatherman noted Wednesday.

“Most of my shots come from an inspiration on the spot,” Leatherman added, “very few shots are planned ahead of time. But when the moment comes, I am very patient, thoughtful, hopeful and deliberate in my approach.”

Leatherman will be at two public receptions: 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 26 and Feb. 29 at Cafe Mekka, 237 Commercial St. in Nevada City.
