Regional marketing

I would like to thank Jeff Ackerman for his editorial advocating regional marketing for western Nevada County. Banding together makes great sense because every tourist that visits Nevada City or Grass Valley probably visits the other as well. Individually, we do not have the resources to market effectively to Sacramento, and the Bay Area, but together we could.

Some people think that Nevada City and downtown Grass Valley should focus on attracting more local customers. There are also complaints that businesses don’t stay open in the evening. Previously, we lived in a town that went through many of the same problems. As it happened, when the town started attracting more tourism, more locals were attracted as well. Main street became the true center of the community.

There is something of a critical mass that occurs when you attract the right numbers of people. It brings about a sustainable dynamism that is truly infectious. When this happens, you don’t have to ask merchants to stay open in the evening, they will because it makes sense. In the end, healthy downtowns are a source of pride and pleasure for the entire community, and rather than threatening small town values, they enable them.
