Recipe for a concert

The task: To find a suitable venue for Nevada County’s Composer Cooperative’s Annual Benefit Concert – a true feast for the senses, an elegant evening of marvelous music, crisp champagne and delectable desserts in a sumptuous setting.

The ingredients: 1 Grotrian grand piano, 1 beautiful private concert hall, 3 talented young musicians, 3 talented older composers and 1 chef.

The musicians: The very talented Pegasus Trio from USC consisting of Pauline Yang on piano, Yoo Kyung Oh on violin and Tina Guo on cello.

The composers: Ludwig Beethoven, Jay Sydeman and Mark Vance – 1 from Vienna and 2 from Nevada City.

The chef: We have composers and musicians but no hall or piano. Enter Glen Cochran! Having already commissioned (along with Britta Tigan) Mark Vance’s Trio, he busies himself organizing this event. Contacting Don Besemer, he obtains permission to use his gorgeous concert hall and locates a Grotrian Concert Grand piano, which he then kindly offers to the Nevada County’s Composer Cooperative for its Benefit Concert.

The history: In 1981, Alan Haley purchased a home on Red Dog Road. Equally fascinated by music and the law (his profession), he began to realize his dream of creating a state-of -the-art miniconcert hall. With the help of an acoustical architect, the structure was created, complete with revolving acoustical paneling. When the house was sold, Don Besemer, the new owner, lovingly installed a Brazilian cherry wood floor and other refinements. The result is a spectacular jewel of a performing hall.

A savory stew: So there we have it … the chef has put together all the ingredients: the hall, the piano, the musicians, the composers along with some crisp champagne, wonderful wine and delectable desserts in a mix of the old and very new … a veritable feast of the senses.
