A pancake for your Valentine

Rough and Ready Grange No. 795 invites you to bring your sweetheart to their Valentine’s breakfast, bake sale, and auction.

They’ll have eggs, waffles, sausages, hash browns, coffee, juice, and homemade music by the Fabulous Fruit Jar Pickers from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, at the grange hall. The auction features delightful wine from Coufos Cellars wine and heavenly sweets from Dorado chocolates.

This bounty can be yours for $5 per person, which will be used to repair their roadway. For more information, call Carole Morris at (530) 432-8931

Newman scholarship dinner

If you’d rather have dinner, consider “For Lovers Only,” a project of Nevada Union High School senior Katherine Beachamp.

A feast is set for 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, at the Stonehouse Hospitality Academy in the Old Brewery, 107 Sacramento St., just south of Broad Street.

Tickets cost $150 per couple – or $100 if you bring another couple along with you. Seating is limited to 50 couples. Tickets are available by e-mailing to or calling (530) 301-7454.

It funds the Newman Memorial Scholarship Foundation, a remembrance of Ryan and Brett Newman, Penn Valley brothers killed in a 2006 wreck.

Calling good books!

This comes from our friends at Friends of the Nevada County Library:

“The recent community outpouring for the libraries has been great. The Friends could use the community’s books as well.

“Historically, the Friends have raised most of our funds through used book sales. Either because of the holidays or the recent stormy weather, we are getting fewer and fewer donations. So, we are looking for more book donations.

“Accepted are paper and hardback books, recorded music and audio books. Please – no magazines, encyclopedias or textbooks.

“Books can be dropped off at any of the county libraries or at Raley’s grocery store in Grass Valley. Large pick-ups can be arranged by e-mailing to”

Readers’ Corner is compiled by The Union staff. To submit items, e-mail them to, and put “RC” and your topic in the subject line, or call (530) 477-4230.
