Readers choose their favorite songs to take to outer space

If you had to spend a month in outer space, what music would you take with you? Here is what some county residents said:

• Sadi of Penn Valley said she’d take “The Best of Bowie” (“How cool would it be to hear Ziggy Stardust in outer space”) and “Southern Harmony and Musical Companion” – Black Crowes (“because you need to rock in space”).

• “Anything by Frank Sinatra,” says Betty of Grass Valley, “Because I love the old ballads ‘HIS’ way.”

• Dave Brubeck Quartet’s “Time Out,” Thelonious Monk’s “Thelonious Alone in San Francisco,” and Paul Desmond’s “Skylark,” says Linda of Alta Sierra.

• Don of Grass Valley would take “Barbershop Harmony” and two big band CDs.

• Two soundtracks – “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Sound of Music” – would be Dee’s companions, plus “Rock and Roll Spectacular” by Barenaked Ladies.

• “All of Beethoven’s symphonies,” said Doug of Nevada City.

• Jeannie of Grass Valley would take anything by the Beatles and “Motown’s Greatest Hits.”

• While Christine of Grass Valley had a long list of musicians, Sweet Honey in the Rock singing “Breaths,” Otis Redding singing the long version of “Try a Little Tenderness,” and “The Reunion Concert” by Siegal Schwall topped it.
