I started this story without the full understanding of how gratifying it can be to give a Gift Basket this Christmas. But now I’m sold.

Nevada City is full of delightful, fun shops housing thousands of unique gifts that are sure to please your recipient. But an unexpected bonus is the pleasure you are sure to experience from thoughtfully selecting your gift basket items. It feels like you are giving a gift to yourself. The gift of happy, relaxed holiday shopping.

You can put the joy back into choosing that special gift when you have the option to give several things instead of just one item you hope will be liked. Gift baskets can be anything you want them to be. There are many gift basket items in Nevada City to fit every budget. All age groups love gift baskets and enjoy the tailor made gift because it is so personal.

There is a cornucopia of selections to be made in Nevada City shops, coffee shops, deli’s and wine tasting rooms, even restaurants. So read on and get your note pad out for some ideas on how you can make your gift one to be remembered, for your special person and for you!

First off, you need a basket. Everyone can use a beautiful basket around the house or office. To get your basket, go to Asylum Down on Broad Street to select a beautiful Bulga basket. These baskets are made in Ghana and start at $8. You can choose from dish-style baskets, to deep round baskets and market baskets. Truly beautiful and utilitarian gift in itself, these baskets lay the foundation for wonderful surprises inside.

For the food lovers on your list, Nevada City offers up some unique and delicious treats.

Java Johns on Broad Street bottles their own brand of homemade jellies and marmalades. Try to choose between Raspberry & peach jalapeno jam, tomato preserves, blood orange, cranberry orange and ginger orange marmalades. Java Johns also markets their own brand of organic coffee beans, including organic espresso. The custom blended coffee beans are available in 1/4 pound bags to 1-pound bags. They also feature Nevada City and Taylor & Harrogate Yorkshire teas.

For award winning deli delights and homemade accoutrements, go to P.J.’s Deli behind SPD on Argall Way. Fill your basket with smoked ham or turkey, sausages, homemade sauces, soup mixes and garnishes unavailable anywhere else.

Like chocolate? It’s everywhere in Nevada City. Try the fantastic dark chocolate pistachios, pastel chocolate cherries, English Toffee caramel, chocolate toffee almonds, chocolate espresso beans and more from Maiden Lane. Yes, Maiden Lane can also round out that gift basket with a customized Nomination bracelet or a favorite accessory by Brighton.

Truffles are always a favorite, and DeGroot’s Truffle Shop in the New York Hotel has a selection sure to please any taste. The truffles are $4 each or they sell boxes of four for $10 and boxes of 8 for $20.

Another jazzy gift shop that offers great gourmet treats is Just Jeanna’s on Commercial and Pine Streets. When was the last time you finished off a jar of Chocolate Body Butter, complete with application brush? You can get your caramel sauce, lemon curd, clotted cream (better than conventional whipped or heavy cream, I’m told) here as well. Wrap that up in a beautiful scarf, or hide them in a cozy pair of socks and your gift basket is sure to please.

The tried but true confections can be found at Confectionately Mine on Broad Street. This is a classic candy store that makes us all digress back into lip-smacking, wide-eyed candy-loving kids. The timeless popularity of See’s chocolates makes it a best seller at the holidays. You may get your boxes at the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, located at the edge of town on Coyote Street.

So, your special friend likes the romantic side of life? Not a problem in Nevada City. Mountain Song can satisfy that romantic starting with a beautiful lingerie selection and sumptuous body creams.

Mountain Song has a variety of horse-lovers gifts, all perfect for gift baskets.

Lingerie and More on Argall Way in Nevada City can lend spice to your gift basket with a large selection of fun games and bridal gifts.

Of course, the definitive body care source is none other than Nevada City’s own national success- V’Tae, on Commercial Street. How about some out-of-this world massage oil, not just any massage oil, but EDIBLE massage oil. If you like the flavors of almond, biscotti, vanilla and/or root beer, and you really like the person you are masseusing, you will have to include this in your gift basket. All edible oils are $10.

Nevada City also has some of most charming gift shops of any town. They all have their own personality and unique gift items, perfect for gift baskets. Country Rose gifts on Broad Street takes you back to the Victorian days where any little thing was beautiful. Even though this neat gift basket idea is not Victorian, it is truly unique and funny. Country Rose now carries the “Cowgirls” series of gifts including coffee mugs displaying 50’s era cowgirl photos and sayings such as “If I don’t think I’m having fun, I’d better move on.”

(Sandra Blacksmith, 1900). Cowgirls also shine on devotion-style candles representing power, confidence, wisdom, spunk and style.

The Cowgirls game entitled “Cowgirls Ride the Trail of Truth” looks like a real hoot.

Mary, Mary, across the street in the New York Hotel has a bevy of unique gifts that will fit perfectly into a basket. Try her luxurious Lavender sheet and ironing sprays. I know it sounds like work or laundry is involved, but really, what a treat! You can also get pre-made or custom made “Cucina” (kitchen fragrance) baskets. These items are for the kitchen and include hand soaps, diffuser jars, room sprays, beautiful cloth napkins and, well, you decide.

For the musician in the group, Yabobo on Broad Street is an eclectic mix of African musical instruments. A diverse musical world unfolds at the CD rack where you can choose from Afro-Latin, Cuban, Flamenco, Celtic, Reggae, Hawaiian, Native American and Jewish/Sephardic selections.

Another popular gift item around the holidays are fine bottles of wine and associated goodies. Nevada City is host to four tasting rooms; Nevada City Winery and Iron Mountain Tasting Rooms on Spring Street, Indian Springs Tasting Room on Broad Street and Carrington’s Fine Wines on Commercial Street. Indian Springs and Nevada City Winery tasting rooms are stocked with practical and beautiful accessories to make that special gift of wine all the more special. Wine gift baskets are always appreciated and enjoyed.
