Protest rate hike

Attention residents and home owners in Grass Valley who received the proposed water and sewer rate increase notice: The notice from the City of Grass Valley states that if they receive enough protests by Oct. 9, they will not raise the rates. Why do they have to raise them in the first place? This writer urges you to send in your protest before Oct. 9.

Rate examples: As of Nov. 1, 2007 residents will be billed $38 per billing period (2 month) for sewer service. The City proposes raising the sewer rate to $44 in July of 2008. Currently, residents are billed $27 for their water meter. The City has proposed raising this to $32 as of Jan. 1, 2008. Currently, folks pay $1.95 per 1,000 gallons of water used. The proposed price hike for Jan. 1, 2008 is 2.31 per 1,000 gallons.

We already had increases in 2007. The City proposes raising rates every year until January of 2012 when the water meter fee will be $52 and sewer fees will be $110. Water will cost 3.75 per 1,000 gallons.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what this meter charge has to do with the actual water used. When the meters were installed it was for water usage, not meter size.

I urge all of you rate payers to attend the public hearing on Oct. 9 and voice your concern. Just maybe, we can finally make a difference!
