Powell releasing new CD

Add singer-songwriter Elena Powell to the list of musicians having area CD-release parties this week. (The two other CD- release parties in Nevada County are the DeadBeats on Friday and Saturday, and Kelly Fleming on Sunday.)

Tonight, Nevada City-based Powell promotes her third full-length CD, “Alta Nova,” at Cooper’s in Nevada City. Expect to hear influences of the Kinks, Joni Mitchell, Harry Nilsson and XTC in Powell’s originals.

She will be joined by band mate Morgan Patton on bass, mouth harp and beat box. Patton also appears on the CD. Powell will play guitar and violin.

Jeff Clark, Powell’s husband and former frontman for Shiva Burlesque, produced the CD; Oz Fritz (who has worked with Tom Waits and Las Pesadillas) mixed the CD.

Powell goes on stage at 9. Admission is free. Cooper’s is at 235 Commercial St. Call 265-0116 with questions.
