Police trying to identify body found in Nevada City

A forensic doctor is conducting an autopsy today to find what killed a person whose body was found Wednesday afternoon in Nevada City.

The body was found with long hair and may be that of a woman, Nevada City Police Chief Lou Trovato said today. “Because of the decomposition, it’s difficult to tell.”

Police also are looking at missing persons reports in their effort to identify the person, Trovato said.

Meanwhile, investigators are trying to get dental records to positively identify the person whose body had been decomposing in a thicket of blackberry bushes on Nevada Street, apparently for several weeks.

Dr. Donald Henrikson, a coroner who contracts with Nevada, Placer and other counties, is performing the autopsy in Placer County, Nevada County Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Smith said. The results may be available later in the day.
