Please support Spirit center

I need to let the Nevada County community know what Spirit Peer Empowerment Center has done for me. I have suffered from mental illness since childhood. I was in numerous hospitals and outpatient programs. In 2003, I moved to Nevada County at the invitation of my sister. I had only her and her husband for support.

I contacted Behavioral Health and they referred me to “Caring Hearts,” which moved to the house at Gates Place and is now Spirit Peer Empowerment Center. There, I got support from people who understood like no therapist or doctor could. The people there had “been through it” and many were in recovery from their illnesses, but Spirit did more. It gave me an opportunity to give back. I became a peer counselor. Spirit gave me understanding, value and purpose.

I believe Spirit Peer Empowerment Center offers something vital and unique to the Nevada County community. If we lost Spirit, it would be a tragedy.

Please, people of Nevada County, support Spirit Peer Empowerment Center. You can do this by sending letters to the county Board of Supervisors. Help us to continue to give understanding, compassion, meaning and purpose to people’s lives.
