Phillips’ memorial set for Sunday at Little League field

The public memorial for Bruce “Utah” Phillips, who died Friday night, will be from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Nevada City Little League field in Pioneer Park.

Phillips was a big baseball fan.

“He was a fixture at the park,” said Cindy Maple, a friend and executive director of Hospitality House. A potluck will follow at Miners Foundry Cultural Center, 325 Spring St., Nevada City – also the memorial venue in case of rain.

“Trains, Tramps & Traditions,” a celebration of Phillips’ music, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Odd Fellows Hall, 212 Spring St., Nevada City.

A private burial for Phillips will be held Thursday.

Phillips, 73, had suffered from chronic heart disease since 2004.

“The house is filled with family and friends. The deep sense of family and community washes over like a varnish forever binding us together,” his son, Duncan Phillips, wrote in a blog Sunday. “We spent the day telling stories, weeping, telling more stories and weeping again.”
