Phillip Smith

Memorial services for Phillip P. Smith will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Penn Valley Community Church.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, April 17, in Reno after a battle with lung cancer. He was 63.

He was born Dec. 26, 1938, in Springfield, Mo., and moved to California as a young boy. He went to school in Wilmington and graduated from Phineas Banning High School. He met his wife, Carol, in high school, and they were married on April 5, 1957.

The family moved to Orange County in 1961 and he joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 1968, where he worked until he was injured in the line of duty and forced to take early retirement in 1977. The family then moved to Lake Tahoe, where he owned an armored transport/security business. The family moved to Grass Valley in 1989 and to Penn Valley in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Glenn Sanders of Lake Tahoe; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Laurie Smith; grandsons Eric and Ryan Sanders and Benjamin and Brandon Smith; mother, Laura V. Smith of Huntsville, Utah; and brother, Timothy M. Smith of Huntsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Phillip Smith Cancer Fund, c/o Placer Sierra Bank, 17464 Penn Valley Drive, Penn Valley 95946. Donations will be forwarded to the American Cancer Society.
