Philip McGallian

Memorial services for Philip Thomas McGallian of Nevada City will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Nevada City. Pastor McGallian died Saturday, Jan. 4, in Nevada County. He was 70.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1932, in Alta Dena to James McGallian and Margaret Sabin. He served in the National Guard. He received a bachelor’s degree and a divinity degree. He married Joy Tatum on Oct. 7, 1950, in Orange County. He was a minister. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada City. He enjoyed fishing, golf, football and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Joy McGallian of Nevada City; daughters Linda Nies of Penn Valley and Susie Butler of Nevada City; twin sister, Pat Cameron of Irvine; brother, Ken McGallian of Irvine; granddaughter, Rebecca Panjwani of Beverly, Mass.; grandson, Tyler Nies of Portland, Ore.; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.



Ruth Picolla




Services for Ruth Stoddard Picolla of Orangevale will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Mrs. Picolla died Tuesday, Dec. 24, in Roseville. She was 79.

She was born on July 31, 1923, in Pennsylvania to Stanley and Gertrude Bridsall. She married Frank Picolla on June 13, 1946. She previously had been a resident of Penn Valley for nine years. She worked for 16 years in furniture sales in Weinstock’s department store and was a member of the American Portuguese Club.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Gary Olson of Orangevale; grandsons Jason Olson of San Francisco, Shawn Olson of Las Vegas, Nev., Christian Olson of Fallon, Nev., and Brandon Olson of Orangevale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Picolla, in 1993.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Mabel Roberts

Graveside services for Mabel Roberts of Grass Valley will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley. Mrs. Roberts died Sunday, Jan. 5, in Grass Valley. She was 89.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1913, in Freemont, Mo., to Mort and Gertrude Zinn. She married Darrel Roberts on Oct. 27, 1935, in Meridian, Idaho. She was a nurse’s aide at Nevada General Hospital and a homemaker. She enjoyed traveling and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Darrel Roberts; daughters Pat Wilder of Grass Valley and Cheryl Harris of Pioneer; son, Larry Roberts of Redding; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Keith Winney, in 1984.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
