Peardale woman killed in collision with semi

A Peardale woman died today after her husband turned their vehicle into the path of an oncoming semi, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officer Jim Donovan said Patricia Gordon, 82, was pronounced dead at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital after being taken from the accident on Highway 174 just south of North Meadow View Drive in Peardale.

Jackson Gordon, 83, was southbound on Highway 174 at 12:45 p.m. when he began pulling into a private driveway in a 1996 Subaru Legacy. Donovan could not confirm it was the Jacksons’ driveway, but their address is listed on Colfax Highway, which is another name for Highway 174 in the same area.

Donovan said witnesses were shocked when Jackson turned in front of a northbound Peterbilt truck being driven by Jarid DePue, 24, of North San Juan. Those same witnesses said DePue tried to avoid the Gordon’s vehicle but had little chance or room to do so, Donovan said.

Jackson Gordon suffered major injuries and was flown by helicopter to Sutter-Roseville Medical Center, Donovan said. DePue reportedly was not visibly injured.
