Parilo has history with school

Corinne Parilo, 54, is a trustee on the Nevada Joint Union High School District Board. If re-elected, she wants to ensure “greater accountability on all levels in the (high school) district.”

“I believe I am not a politician, I am an advocate for kids,” Parilo said. “For eight years, I substituted at Nevada Union. For two years, I taught at Nevada Union. I am an outsider with an insider’s perspective on where that school needs to go.”

Parilo has been a Nevada County resident since 1976. Both her son and daughter are Nevada Union graduates.

Coming from a family with a strong teaching background ” Parilo’s mother was a kindergarten teacher for 21 years ” Parilo has a bachelor’s degree in English and a secondary teaching credential from UC-Davis.

As a trustee of the high school district board, Parilo regularly visits the three high school campuses ” Nevada Union, Bear River and Park Avenue Alternative Education Center.

“I believe in order to do an effective job as a board member, I need to be in touch with programs, teachers, and, first and foremost, our students,” she said. “My campaign slogan four years ago was, ‘It’s about the kids.’ My campaign slogan now is, ‘It’s still about the kids.'”

Parilo said being a contributor in society is important to her.

“Be part of something that is bigger than yourself” is her mantra and advice to students.
