Ozone problem

Thanks to the heads-up from The Union, I attended the STA-in-NC (Save The Air in Nevada County) meeting Wednesday evening. The excellent, informative presentation by Jeff Kane, Alan Stahler and Joe Fish was alarming.

We have a serious environmental health problem with ground-level ozone. Everyone in western Nevada County should know about this and think about ways to protect ourselves.

Part of the problem is that we literally can’t see it. STA-in-NC is trying to raise a modest amount of money for a portable monitor in order to expand the data base.

Bravo, but public officials really need to step up here. How about sensors on the roofs and real time displays in the lobbies of both city halls, the Rood Center, and all the schools? Science projects for the kids (and for the scientists for that matter) and information and awareness for the rest of us.
