Orville Nicholson

Private family graveside services for Orville Leslie “Nick” Nicholson of Grass Valley will be conducted at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Mr. Nicholson died Thursday, April 4, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. He was 93.



He was born March 25, 1909, in Nevada City to Levi and Mamie Nicholson. He was a lifelong resident of Nevada County, graduating from Nevada City High School in 1932. He married Nora Lee Nettles in 1936 in Reno.




After high school, he worked a short time for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. He then worked for Nevada Irrigation District as a carpenter, foreman and head ditch tender in charge of water distribution for 42 years, before retiring in 1974.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys, the outdoors, his dogs and his family.

He is survived by his sons Orville Lee Nicholson and Leslie Bernard Nicholson, both of Grass Valley; grandchildren Tony Nicholson of North Carolina, Rocky Nicholson of Truckee, Marco Nicholson of Grass Valley, Tayna Pettigrew of Washington, Sabrina Nicholson of Grass Valley and Justin Nicholson of Colfax; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
