On the Scene

Hope you all enjoyed Constitution Day weekend. Nevada City rocked!

More Nevada City: Thousands of dollars worth of art, jewelry and garden pieces are going up for auction Saturday at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer Park (noon to 6 p.m.) to help raise money for the organization supporting SB 840 (affordable health care). Call Jennifer Cull at 432-1299 for more information.

Now, Grass Valley: 1) Wordslingers 2008 lived up to its reputation Saturday with Coleman Barks reading Rumi (see my blog online).

2) The She Devils and Those Bar-B-Que Guys are duking it out tonight at 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express on Bank Street for the supreme title in United Way of Nevada County’s BBQ Battle of the Sexes. Tickets are $5 for two tastes and one chance to vote. More information: 274-8111 and http://www.uwnc.org. Go cheer them on.

3) Author Dr. Jean Houston, who specializes in Human Capacities, is lecturing and signing her book Friday at Unity in the Gold County, corner of Whispering Pines and Cambridge Ct. in Grass Valley, 7-9 p.m. She does a workshop the next day. Contact Suzie Daggett, (530) 265-9255 or online at http://www.insightdirectory.com.

Trivia: “Typewriter” is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. True?

Let’s hope this from Revolution Books New York – If voting could really change things, it would be illegal – is proved wrong in November
