On the Scene

Was the WorldFest hot, or not? I caught part of Friday’s Emeline Michel’s show. Wow, she was making people dance like crazy; great rhythms.

The Union Design Editor Ken Gutierrez went to Saturday’s event and wrote up his thoughts, which have been posted on our Web site at http://www.theunion.com. This was his fifth WorldFest and he LOVES Ozomatli, so he knows what he’s talking about.

The “BBQ Battle of the Sexes” wants you to create a team to compete. Tempted? It’s a fundraiser for United Way with the first round taking place 4-7 p.m. Aug. 14 in Grass Valley. Contact admin@uwnc.org or (530) 274-8111 for more details.

For you who have an extra $250 (for individual dinner ticket) and want to save the historic Thunderbird Lodge at Lake Tahoe, you still have a chance. Aug. 17 is the next dinner event; the series ends Oct. 19. Call 1-775-832-8754 or register online at http://www.ThunderbirdLodge.org. Apparently the lodge is ready to collapse from its rocky promontory into the lake.

Our pop culture, dig it or hate it. Go to http://www.peoplejam.com/blogs/cheaters to find America’s five most scandalous public affairs. No surprises there for a People magazine reader. Reading through the remarks to the blog, though, is pretty trippy.

A winning word on the Mensa 2008 list (an artificial word with only one letter altered to form a real word) is Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

Remember to patronize our farmer’s markets: It’s good for the local economy, it’s good for your health.
