Obituary: Mary Cartwright

Mary Lou Cartwright of Grass Valley died Tuesday, Dec. 25, in Grass Valley at age 78. Services will be conducted at a later date, to be announced. Burial will be at Malta Cemetery in Malta, Mont.

Mrs. Cartwright, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-54, was an active leader in the Disabled American Veterans.

She was born April 5, 1923, in Payette, Idaho, to Ray and Mae Decker. A 1941 graduate of Payette High School, she later earned undergraduate and master’s degrees in science and medical technology.

She married Chad Cartwright in Boise, Idaho on Sept. 13, 1947.

Mrs. Cartwright was a medical technician in Houston for two years before moving to California. She worked as a medical technologist and consultant for hospitals and medical laboratories in the Bay Area. Mrs. Cartwright was twice named California medical technologist of the year, and she served in numerous positions – including president – for the California Association of Medical Technologists.

She enjoyed travel and visiting with relatives.

Survivors include sister and brother-in-law, Millie and Harold “Buck” Darewitt of Nevada City; niece, Linda Starry; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chad, in 1991.

Hooper and Weaver Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
