Obituary: Jean Maxwell

A memorial graveside service for Jean Maxwell of Pierre, S.D., a former resident of Grass Valley, was conducted April 5 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.



Mrs. Maxwell died Friday, March 29, at Beverly Healthcare in Pierre, S.D. She was 85.




She was born Jan. 24, 1917, on a farm near Tulare, S.D., to Gordon and Nellie (Bernard) MacNeill. She attended elementary school in Buffalo Township, Spink County, and graduated from Tulare High School in 1935.

She married Russell H. Maxwell on March 21, 1936, in Miller, S.D. They farmed in the Tulare and Cresbard areas. In 1955, they moved to Fort Pierre, then in 1962 to Grass Valley. She worked at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for 15 years, lived in Arizona after retiring, and moved to Fort Pierre in 1988.

She is survived by her daughter Alline Heidenreich of Aberdeen, S.D.; daughter and son-in-law Mary Ellen and Mike Ronish of Fort Pierre; sons and daughters-in-law Gerald and Nina Maxwell of Grass Valley, Robert and Sheila Maxwell of Fort Pierre, and Donald and Betty Maxwell of Salina, Kan.; sisters-in-law Lela Maxwell of Huron, S.D., Phyllis Green of Broomfield, Colo., and Alice Slattery of Longmont, Colo.; 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Elton and Laird MacNeill.
