Richard Edward Rohde died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at Brunswick Village, his residence for the last eight years.

Richard was born Dec. 30, 1912, to Knud and Maria Kristine Nielson Rohde in Salinas, Calif. He celebrated his 100th birthday last year, surrounded by his family and friends.

On June 19, 1941, he married Helen Miller Nisbet, who died in 2009. They were married for 67 years.

Richard “Dick” joined the Oakland Fire Department in July of 1941 as the last stoker hired. He was proud to have risen through the ranks from stoker to captain, serving in each capacity available.

At one point, he served simultaneously as photographer and head of Civil Defense and captain.

After retiring in January of 1966, he and Helen moved to North Bloomfield where he worked and volunteered and was a lifetime member of E Clampus Vitus and the Malakoff Diggins Park Association. Eventually, he was informally considered mayor of North Bloomfield, Calif.

He is survived by daughters, Edith C. Rohde of Wheeler, Ore., Janice M. Bilberry (Dalton) of Grass Valley, Calif. and Chris Stark (Tom) of North Bloomfield, Calif., eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Nisbet Rohde, his parents and three sisters.

Per his wishes, there will be no services. His ashes will be buried in the family plot in North Bloomfield beside his wife.
