Obituary of William “Bill” Roberts, Jr.

William “Bill” Roberts, Jr. passed away on April 9, 2019, surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson ’s disease. He was 86.

Bill was born on May 6, 1932 in San Angelo, TX, to William and Gladys Roberts. He grew up in San Angelo then attended the University of Texas in Austin where he graduated with a degree in Architecture and Planning. While in college he met the love of his life, Glenda Evans. Bill and Glenda were married on February 20, 1954, a marriage that lasted 59 years.

Following college, Bill began his career as a city planner with a consulting firm that developed a plan for downtown Austin. Following the Austin project, Bill headed west to join the Bay area firm, Pacific Planning and Research. In 1961, Bill left the private sector to become the first Planning Director for Nevada County. From Nevada County, Bill joined the Sierra Economic Development District. In 1972, Bill left SEDD to become the first Planning Director of Grass Valley, a position he held and enjoyed until his retirement in 2001.

Bill was a member of the Grass Valley Host Lions Club, where he made lifetime friends working on projects throughout the community. He could always be counted on, especially for an extra shift at the corn booth and he loved every minute of it.

During his retirement, Bill was able to enjoy traveling with Glenda, spending time with friends and family and watching his granddaughters swim. When asked about retirement, Bill responded with a smile, “I’ve worked my whole life for this. It is the best gig I’ve ever had.”

He is survived by his daughters Terri Bennette of Steubenville, OH, and Kim Imus-Epworth of Sacramento, CA; 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Bill is preceded in death by his father William N Roberts, his mother Gladys M Jordan, his wife Glenda R Roberts and his son, Dwayne E Roberts.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6,, 2019, at the LOVE Building, 660 Minnie St, Grass Valley, CA.

Arrangements are under the care of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
