Obituary of Shirley Schmidt

Shirley Marion (Bartz) Schmidt passed away in Grass Valley Oct 29, 2019 following complications from a fall at the age of 99.

Shirley was born in Detroit, MI, July 16, 1920 and attended schools there, graduating from Albion College. She joined the Navy WAVES in 1944 and subsequently met her Navy pilot husband, Donald, on Ft. Lauderdale Beach.

Shirley and Don married in 1946 and moved to California to start their family in the SF Bay Area. They were the first married couple to graduate from San Mateo Junior College. In 1963, they relocated to Grass Valley.

Shirley owned Payless Cleaners and worked for EDD. She was a volunteer for Cancer Aid Thrift, SNMH auxiliary, BSM Women’s Triathlon, GV Rifle, Rod and Gun Club Auxiliary, Watt Park Fire Dept and a regular blood donor. She attended Sierra Presbyterian Church. Shirley traveled the World, but yet there was always a sheet cake with chocolate frosting in the kitchen and ice cream in the freezer!

She is survived by her daughter Karen Schmidt Ling, sons in law John Lipp and Charles Millar, and grandson Stewart Millar. She was predeceased by her husband Don, son Mark and daughter Barbara Schmidt Millar.

Shirley will be released to heaven off the coast of Florida, per her wishes, at a later date.
