Obituary of Richard Russell Simpson

Richard Russell Simpson left this earth to survey a different section of land on Wednesday May 8, 2019. He was born in Sonora, Ca. on July 2, 1947 to Ted and Margaret Simpson. Richard graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1965, he went on to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and Industrial Arts. On October 17, 1970 he married his wife of 48 years, Cherie. They embarked on an exciting adventure when he was hired as a surveyor for the National Park Service. For two years, they travelled the western United States surveying and living in numerous National Parks. They settled in Nevada City when Richard went to work with the US Forest Service in 1975. He left the U.S.F.S. to start a survey business, S&E Engineering in Grass Valley with partner, Dick Eacobacci.

Richard impacted the lives of his friends with his sound financial advice, gourmet cooking tips and wonderful garden produce. He was the premier DIYer, agonizing whenever he had to pay someone to do something he couldn’t. His favorite pastime was sharing fine wine and delicious food with his friends and family. Richard will be remembered for his subtle sarcastic humor, his quiet intelligence and humble generosity.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife Cherie; his energetic dog, Brix; brother Bruce (Barbara); sister Susan (Lee); sisters Margaret and Teddy; and several nieces and nephews. He had many friends from Nevada City, Grass Valley, Chico, Reno and Redding.

A private gathering will be planned in the future. In lieu of flowers, please honor him with a donation to Sammie’s Friends or Animal Save.

Arrangements are under the care of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
