Ralph Rudkin

Ralph L. Rudkin of South Riding, Va., passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 84.

Ralph was born in Stockton, Calif. July 14, 1929, to Dr. Ralph L. Rudkin Sr. and Amy Morse Rudkin. He was married to Kathryn Huckeby Rudkin for 63 years.

He received the Bausch and Lomb science award upon graduation from Grass Valley High School in the class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. After the service, he returned to U.C. Berkeley where he studied electrical engineering.

His Navy civilian contractor work in early research in the field of lasers led him to be honored and inducted as a Fellow at the International Thermal Conductivity Symosium in 1999 in Pittsburg, Penn.

Ralph was an active member of the Chancel Choir at Centreville United Methodist for almost 28 years.

Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by his daughter Lynn McElhaney; former son-in-law Randall McElhaney; granddaughters, Katie (Jonathan) Thayer and Laura McElhaney; sisters, Marion Mann of Medford, Ore., and Virginia Kingston of Nevada City; brother Wayland Rudkin and wife, Virginia of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
