Lois Shafer

Lois Irene (Miller) Shafer of Grass Valley died Saturday, March 21, 2015, at home surrounded by her family. She was 82.

Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary, 459 Hollow Way in Nevada City. A reception will follow at the Nevada County Horsemen Lodge at 10600 Bubbling Wells Road in Grass Valley.

Lois was born on Sept. 3, 1932, in Odessa, Nebraska, to Albert and Esther (Journey) Miller. She graduated from Long Fellow High School in Kearney, Nebraska, in 1950. She married Ralph Medric Shafer on May 19, 1951, in Yuma, Arizona. After Ralph’s discharge from the U.S. Navy they moved to Colfax and then finally settled in Grass Valley.

She worked for the Fort Kearney Hotel, Colfax Fruit Growers Hardware, The Union newspaper, Blue Dolphin Press, and retired from the Nevada County Planning Department in January 2000.

She loved singing, playing the piano, dancing, playing cards, watching her grandsons play sports, and family events.

She is survived by her daughter Janet Lee of Grass Valley; grandsons, Andrew Lee of San Jose, Jesse Lee of Grass Valley and Shawn Lee of Arcata; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Nancy Miller of Denver, Colorado; sister and brother-in-law, Fran and Denny Bowen of Huntley, Illinois; sister Deborah Douthit of Lincoln, Nebraska; longtime dance partner and loving companion Myron Shafer of Colfax; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Delphie Mazankowski of Weimar; sisters-in-law, Louise Shafer of Roseville, and Rosemary Shafer of Kearney, Nebraska; brother-in-law Gene Harvey of Ransom Canyon, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Shafer on March 29, 1987; son Randy Alan Shafer on Sept. 28, 1953; daughter Patricia Joleen Shafer on Aug. 22, 1960; father Albert Miller on Oct. 17, 1973; mother Esther Laughlin on Nov. 23, 1998; sister Linda Miller on Nov. 7, 1952; and a grandson on Dec. 26 1989.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills, 11270 Rough and Ready Hwy., Grass Valley, CA 95945.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
