Obituary of George Arthur Peavy

George Arthur Peavy passed away on Sept. 12, 2016.

Born Aug. 10, 1930 in San Francisco, George touched many souls in his 86 years on earth. He grew up in an athletic family but his first love was music. He attended College of Pacific getting his Master’s Degree in Music and meeting the love of his life Dorothy. After a short stint in the Army, he and Dorothy settled in Grass Valley where he took a job as the new band director at Grass Valley High School. Not one to let the grass grow under his feet he also became a successful coach of the wrestling, cross country and track teams. He brought a few league championships home and became a mentor to many young men. A lot of people will remember him teaching them how to drive as one of the schools driver training instructors. He even spent time teaching inmates at the county jail so they could get their GED’s and get out early. As his sons George David and Mike were finishing their high school running careers, he took up running on a whim. His first run was 10 miles. He finished his first of three Western States 100 mile Runs 18 months later. George and Dorothy loved traveling and visited more than 100 countries on some unique trips. George had a love of flying and both owned and flew many types. He loved giving rides to anyone who wanted to go. His talent for investing brought him great joy as he really tried to make all decisions benefit everyone involved. Maybe his best virtue was that he was willing and able to help almost anyone who needed help. George was a regular at the Grass Valley United Methodist Church as well as the Nevada City Presbyterian Church. He lived a long and happy life and is survived by his wife of 65 years Dorothy; sons George (Susanne) David; and grandchildren Aaron, Cameron and Josh, Mike(Katherine); his brother Bob (Claudia).

A Celebration Of Life will be held starting 1 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 23rd at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road in Nevada City. Refreshments will follow. Parking is limited at the church so please carpool with friends.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Interfaith Food Ministry, as well as Hospice of the Foothills, 11270 Rough & Ready Highway, Grass Valley, CA 95945.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
