Obituary of Evelyn L. Dalaba

Evelyn L. Dalaba passed away at Golden Empire Nursing and Rehab on May 9, 2016. She was 97.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at Forest View Cemetery in Nevada City.

Evelyn was born in Stockton on April 26, 1919 to Harvey and Emma Way. She graduated from Poly High School in San Francisco. She married Fred Blough in 1937 and had two daughters, Dian and Joann. They moved to Nevada County in 1946 and later she divorced Fred. In the 1950’s, she married Edwin Dalaba and opened the first of her two restaurants, The Sugarloaf just below the National Hotel in Nevada City. The second restaurant, the Kopper Kettle, was on Broad Street just below the fire house.

She belonged to Business and Professional Women of Nevada County, the Rebekah’s and Odd Fellows. She loved education and returned to college several times.

Evelyn will be missed, and is survived by her daughter Joann; son-in-law Mike Akiyoshi; and their children, Sachiko (Jeff) Lee, Michiko, Teruko and Michael and another grandson, Steven (Joan) Case. She touched many lives through her restaurants and the Rebekah’s.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Fred and Edwin; and her daughter Dian Masson.

Arrangements are under the care of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
