Obituary of Elizabeth “Betsy” Rice Allgeier

With birds singing outside her open window, Dr. Elizabeth "Betsy" Rice Allgeier passed away peacefully in her daughter Beth's arms on October 9, in Grass Valley, CA. Born March 4, 1941, in Andover, MA to William and Jane Perry, Betsy was raised in Massachusetts and California. At Oxnard High School, she excelled in drama and academics, chosen Most Likely to Succeed. She earned her BS from the University of Oregon, and Masters from SUNY Oswego. She met the love of her life, Rick Allgeier, during graduate school at Purdue University, where both earned a PhD in Psychology. Betsy taught at Eastern Michigan, SUNY Fredonia, and others, before settling in Bowling Green, OH. A popular lecturer and

professor at BGSU, Betsy mentored hundreds of graduate students. Many of her "grads" became leaders in their fields, often citing her influence in their success. Betsy was a perennial finalist before winning BGSU's Master Teacher Award (1988), then Outstanding Contributor to Graduate Education (1992), and Professor Emeritus, upon retirement (2004). Betsy was a world renowned researcher, professor and writer in social psychology, authored many books and articles, was a Kinsey Institute Fellow, and a past president of the international Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. Betsy and Rick co-authored "Sexual Interactions," a human sexuality textbook. Adopted by Harvard, and translated into French, it went on to five editions. As a young woman, Betsy worked on progressive political campaigns, protested, and spoke up for the underdog. She sang beautifully, baked tantalizing bread, sewed her young children's clothes, and cried at their choir concerts. Later, she enjoyed family travel, reading novels, watching college sports, and gardening. In 2005, Betsy suffered a stroke, and Rick passed away a few months later. Betsy then moved to assisted care in CA, where her daughter, Beth, cared for Betsy for her remaining 11 years. Betsy still enjoyed travel and family visits, Unitarian church services, movies, novels, cuddling with her beloved dog Rosie, and bantering with friends and caregivers. She was known there for her style, irreverent sense of humor, and acceptance of everyone. Betsy is survived by her children and their partners: Beth Moore (David Kuczora), Grass Valley, CA; Sarah Perry (Bill Ramos), Issaquah, WA; Kate Laughlin (Tim Murray), Seattle, WA; and Don Allgeier (Corinne Rupp), Portland, OR; her nine grandchildren: Forrest, Laurel, Larkin, Maya, Max, Rowan, Satie, Odile and Penelope; step-sister Ginny, FL; Perry and Lewis cousins, MA and CA; and Scheppner in-laws, PA. Betsy was previously married to Richard Moore (father of Sarah and Beth), and Charles Laughlin (father of Kate). Betsy was predeceased by her husband Rick (father of Don). Betsy's children were happy to gather with her days before her passing.
