Obituary of Dorothy Allen

Dorothy Ellen Kowalczyk Allen passed away Monday, August 11, 2014, one day shy of her 90th birthday.

A rosary will be at 5 p.m. on Fri., Aug. 15 followed by a funeral mass Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grass Valley.

Dorothy was born August 12, 1924 in Flint, Mich. to Polish immigrants, Anna “Golunka” and John Kowalczyk. She was the third of seven children. Dorothy married the love of her life at 19 and moved to Greenville, S.C., where he was stationed in the Army Air Corps. They moved to Calif. in 1950, settling in Penn Valley in 1964.

Dorothy worked as a Teacher’s Assistant for the Ready Springs School District for 30 years. Her hobbies included crafts, gardening and baking. She was well known for her rhubarb pies and authentic Polish dinners. Dorothy shared her family recipes and love of native wildflowers with her grandchildren, something they will always cherish.

She is survived by son, George Allen of Carson City, Nev.; son, Jim (Dana) Allen of Penn Valley; daughter, Janis (Ray) Fox of Rough and Ready; sister, Mary Ann (Ralph) Etu of Clio, Mich.; brother, Bob Kowalczyk of Flint, Mich., nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Marion George Allen Sr. in 2001; son, John William Allen in 2005, several brothers and sisters and dear friend, Arlys McDowell in 2012.
