Obituary of Carl Mason Hanes

Carl Mason Hanes of Grass Valley, formerly of San Jose, California, died unexpectedly in his home on July 10, 2017. He was 62.

Carl was born in Whittier, California to Mason Day Hanes and Elizabeth Abell Hanes.

Carl retired in June of 2016 after a long and fulfilling thirty-eight year career at BAE Systems (formerly United Defense LP and FMC Corporation). Carl was the Operations/Facilities Manager for many years at the San Jose/Santa Clara site. His many contributions included a facility coordination for the site visit by the President of the United States in 2003. Carl was always genuine and inspiring, and always finding the positive in any situation. His inspiring contributions and loss will be remembered by his many colleagues and friends at BAE.

Anytime spent with Carl moved everyone into friend status with him and even family. He lived his life at full speed, with a smile and with pride in all that he did with his attention to detail. His home is a great example of his best creative work, be it the hardwood floors or the landscaping of themed areas in his yard. Everyone who knew Carl also knew of his love of Nascar, the Giants especially because Cindy was a Dodgers Fan, and his all-time favorite activity of spending time with friends and neighbors playing games. He was an accomplished piano player and he loved playing ragtime. He could be found at concerts from all musical genre, traveling with his wife Cindy and is best known for his Christmas decorations which started to appear every year right after Thanksgiving. He loved the traditional annual Hanes Cookie Day. His smile was infectious and his humor unmatched. He was a gentlemen’s gentleman.

Carl is survived by his loving wife Cindy Hanes; his sisters Judy (Joe) Johnson of Stockton, Martha (Chuck) Lumia and Valerie Schwartz of San Diego; daughters Melissa and Sarah Hanes; granddaughter Layla Hanes; and his many treasured friends he called family as well as his dogs Bandit and Sierra.

Mason Day Hanes and Elizabeth Abell Hanes preceded him in death.
