Allen was born on Sep. 20, 1930 in San Diego, Calif. to Terry Bowen Hughes and Nadine Middaugh Hughes. Growing up, Allen split his time with his parents going between San Diego and Alleghany/Forest, Calif. He graduated from Banning High School in Banning, Calif. in June of 1948. After many odd jobs in Alleghany, Allen joined The Air Force in Dec. 1949, where he met his first wife, Ida, while stationed in England. After he discharged from the military, he went back to Alleghany where Ida joined him from England. They were married 42 years when Ida passed away in 1996. Allen met Gladys Olson in Lapine, Ore., and they were married in March 2000, in Shady Cove, Ore. They moved back to Calif. in 2006 to Dobbins, where they lived until Allen passed away.
Allen’s involvement in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Telephone Pioneers, Nevada County Horsemen’s, horseback riding, boating, fishing, working on his classic cars, and spending time with family and friends, kept him busy after retiring from Pac Bell in 1982.
Allen’s love of life, family and friends, along with his witty sense of humor will be greatly missed but never forgotten by everyone who knows and loves him. He was the best father, grandfather, and great-grandfather anyone could have hoped for.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Hughes; brother, Dennis (Marilyn) Hughes; sons, Allen Hughes and Dennis (Jill) Hughes; daughter, Roxanne (Jeff) Jones; grandchildren, Desiree Pemberton, Rita Harvey, Amanda (Scott) Zimmerman, Allen (Emili) Sassman, Richard Hughes, Kimberly Jones, Katherine (Josh) Trimeloni, and Justin Jones; seven great grandchildren and extended family, Connie (Steve) Clevenger, Sam (Marsha) Olson, Cynthia Johnson, and their children.
Allen is preceded in death by his father, Terry and mother, Nadine; stepmother, Macy Faurot, first wife, Ida Hughes; sister-in-law, Carol Hughes; uncle, Richard Middaugh and cousin, Deanna Sapp.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.
