Obituary of Alice Carolyn Soby
Alice Carolyn Soby passed away on April 30, 2016.
Alice was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 20, 1920. She grew up in the Great Depression and later World War II surrounded by a loving, extended family.
She was a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1943 and an initiate of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Her early years as a professional were spent in the airlines and advertising industries. Later, her major career focus was in the field of human resources where she was second in command for the Human Resources Department of Sunbeam Corporation. She finished her career as a Vice President of HR and board member for Itofca Corporation, an independent shipping association, in suburban Chicago. She was a frequent instructor for other professionals in her field.
In 1984 she and her husband Edward moved from Western Springs, Illinois to Claremont, California, where they were active in civic and church activities. In 1990 prior to the birth of their first granddaughter, Allison, they moved to Woodland Hills, California. Edward passed away in June of 1998.
When Alice’s daughter Carolyn and her family moved from Tarzana to Penn Valley in 2005, she joined them three months later. At age 85 she thoroughly embraced her new community by joining Newcomers, and transferring her memberships from southern California to the local chapters of P.E.O. and Eastern Star. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, a 500+ hour volunteer for Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, and an active member of the Alliance for Music in the Mountains. Always a supporter of the arts, she was one of the founders of the Foothill Children’s Chorus making her dream of bringing music to children in the county come alive. She took great pride in having served two terms on the Nevada County Grand Jury.
She is survived by her daughter Dr. Carolyn (Peter) Bronson; adult stepchildren Paul (Annette) Soby and John (Tricia) Austin; grandchildren, Allison, Caroline and Kristin Bronson, David (Keturah) Austin, Sarah (Jason) Harkness, Douglas Darnall-Austin, James (Laura) Perreault, Eric Soby and Rick Soby; great-grandchildren, McKinsey and Kaydence Perreault, Jessica Austin, and Brandon, Matthew and Abigail Harkness; and great-great-granddaughter Elisebeth Waas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian Petrie Anderson and George Anderson Sr.; as well as her sister Dorothy; brother George Anderson Jr.; son Allan Perreault; and granddaughter Kim Barber.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. on May 31 at Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley. Private interment will take place later at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego.
