Obituary June Gilbert

June Virginia Gilbert passed away on July 21, 2014. She was 88.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Mon., July 28 at Sierra Memorial Lawn, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City. A reception will follow at Don and Cheryl Dachtler’s home.

June was born on August 8, 1925, in Atlanta, Ga.

She graduated from Commercial High School in Atlanta and married Leamon Gilbert on July 13, 1943, in Conyers, Ga. They recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Early in her marriage she worked for the Navy as a stenographer in Philadelphia, Penn. While Leamon was a student at Georgia Tech, June worked for Pitney Bowes.

June and Leamon raised five children while living in Atlanta, Ga., Pensacola, Florida, Sharon, Mass., Pittsburgh, Penn., and Morris Plains, N.J. She was active in her church teaching Sunday school, being Den Mother in her sons’ Cub Scout troops, and serving as a Troop Leader in her daughters’ Girl Scout troops. She worked in the Business Office of Drew University, Madison, N.J.

June and Leamon enjoyed traveling through Europe, South America and Australia, visiting national parks in the continental states, Alaska and Hawaii and making yearly trips around the country to visit children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. June was active in the First Baptist Church in Morristown, N.J. for 45 years, being the “go-to” gal when no one else would volunteer. June also loved all forms of needlework; knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint and embroidery. She especially loved tending the geraniums in the window boxes and the rhododendron bushes around the patio. She was best known for her warm hospitality and beautiful table settings at the holidays and other family events. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a gentle soul with only kind words for everyone.

June and Leamon moved to Grass Valley, Calif. in 2009, most recently living in Eskaton Village.

She is survived by her husband, Leamon; son, Richard (Pam) Gilbert of Orlando, Florida; daughter, Cheryl (Don) Dachtler of Nevada City, Calif.; son, Terry (Rebecca) Gilbert, Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Robbin (Chris) Gibbons of Andover, N.J.; grandchildren, Jennifer Moulton, William Coughtry, Elizabeth Wray, Sandra Gibbons, Joe Gibbons, June Gibbons, Tyler Gilbert, Colin Gilbert, Ethan Sotelo, Brian Sotelo and great-grandchildren, Rebecca Coughtry, Emily Moulton, David Martinez, Jr., Larry Wray, and Ashley Wray.

June was preceded in death by her son, Norman Lee Gilbert in 2003 and grandson-in-law, Jim Moulton in 2008.
