Dorothy Davis

Dorothy Jane Davis (Dottie) of Grass Valley passed away at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital on Nov. 2, 2013, surrounded by many loving family members She was 93.

There will be a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Crafters’ Courtyard at Eskaton Village, 625 Eskaton Circle in Grass Valley.

Dottie was born on July 1, 1920, to Walter and Jean Staeffler in Manitowoc, Wis. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and graduated in 1941 with high honors.

Her interests were in economics and financing.

Dottie joined the Navy and served at Muroc Air Force Base where, as a dispersing officer, she met her husband, Clifton H. Davis. They married in 1948 and had four children: Barbara Jane, Thomas Clifton, Richard John and Catharine Helen.

They raised their family in Redondo Beach, Calif. During this time, Dottie was active in the Riviera United Methodist Church, the Torrance Family YMCA and IEEE auxiliary. In 1973, they retired to Blueberry Hill in Grass Valley, which she loved dearly. Dottie later retired from blueberry farming to her home on Copper Drive. Her most recent residence was Eskaton Village in Grass Valley.

Dottie’s interests included stamp collecting, knitting, quilting, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, golf, Packers football, painting, music, canning, reading, travel and Bingo — to name a few. She had a very inquiring mind and a sharp memory. Her applesauce was the best! Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy.

She leaves behind her sister, Mary Staeffler of Wilmington, Del.; daughter Barbara Bilyeu (Gene) of Templeton, Calif.; son Richard Davis (Nancy) of Campbell, Calif.; daughter Catharine Kunkel (Ken) of Grass Valley; grandchildren Hilary Mauch (Gerry) of Las Vegas, Nev., Paul Burkle of Morro Bay, Calif., Kate Rogers (Tim) of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Melinda Kunkel (Jeff Orsino) of Grass Valley.

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Staeffler, husband Clifton Davis and son Thomas Davis.
