David Louis Floyd
David Louis Floyd passed away on Oct. 31, 2013, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, Calif., after a sudden illness. He was just a month shy of his 74th birthday.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Abundant Life Community Church, 10795 Alta St., Grass Valley, CA.
David was born Nov. 29, 1939, the first of eight children from the marriage of Cletus and Gwendolyn Floyd. With a combination of 11 children total, it was a busy house. In 1959, David married Cora Mettler, and they eventually had three children of their own — Jerry, David and Shari.
In the early 1960s, David and Cora moved to San Luis Obispo County where David began to paint cars and opened Superior Autobody, a successful business for many years. While in San Luis Obispo, David met his longtime friend and companion, Sharon Baldridge, and her two daughters, Holly and Kandi, whom he loved as though they were his own. David and Sharon shared many adventures and journeys while remaining friends for over 40 years.
Thirty years after moving to San Luis Obispo, David felt the beauty of the mountains tug at his heart and he made the move to Grass Valley. For the last five years, Dave has been blessed with the companionship of his very dear friend, Marilyn Petrie, who has stood by his side through the ups and the downs of life.
Whether it was pencil on paper, watercolor on canvas or paint on a car, David was an artist and he loved the supreme beauty of what God created in nature. He loved to draw and paint nature and even won a prize — while visiting one of his brothers — for a painting he did of something he had seen while visiting his sister in Canada. David would sketch on anything he had available and give the art away, just for the look of joy on the face of the recipient. David loved family get-togethers and enjoyed sharing stories from days gone by. His “punctuality and impeccable time-management” were legendary amongst family and friends.
David is survived by his children, Jerry Leon Floyd (Julie-Ann), David Dean Floyd (Claire) and Shari Renee Fair (Delton); and six grandchildren, Serena Sabovich (David), Natasha Sinkler, Deanna Floyd, Astasia Floyd, Kalah Sinkler and Josiah Sinkler. David is also survived by eight of his 11 brothers and sisters and his very dear companion, Marilyn Petrie.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Cletus and Gwendolyn Floyd; and brothers Dempsey Floyd and Steven Floyd.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
