Number of charges and bail increased in child pornography case

Nevada County Sheriff’s investigators say they may have enough evidence to charge a Nevada County man with numerous counts of felony child molestation.

Nevada County Sheriff Lt. Ron Smith said investigators have uncovered evidence that Luis Ponce, 49, has been molesting children in Nevada County for more than a year.

Computer discs and video tapes of someone engaged in “substantial sexual contact” with more than one child – male and female – were recovered at Ponce’s home and workplace by Berkeley Police Department and Nevada County Sheriffs investigators.

Investigators are confident the man in the video and computer images is Ponce.

“We believe it was him,” Smith said. Smith said a search of Ponce’s body will reveal more evidence of his involvement.

Ponce was arrested Jan. 26 at his home on the 13000 block of Rattlesnake Road for possession of child pornography and transported to Alameda County to face the charges, where he worked as a paramedic supervisor for the Berkeley Fire Department.

He is now charged with 57 counts of possession of child pornography, and his bail is set at $999,999.

He is scheduled to enter a plea on those charges Feb. 15.
