No increase in Nevada County Fair admission price this year, board decides

The directors of the Nevada County Fair have abandoned plans to increase by $1 the admission price to this year’s fair.

The board ditched plans to raise prices after several members said they’d like to explore other options to increase revenue for the fair that don’t hurt paying customers.

Nevada County Fair CEO Ed Scofield made a recommendation to increase the admission price for adults to $6 and children to $3 in part because of the rising cost of utilities and the need to upgrade some of the facilities at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Board members said the increase in admission prices comes too soon after the board decided to raise parking fees before the 2004 fair from $3 to $4.

Scofield said he had to raise the fair’s budget from $549,000 to $616,000 because of new expenditures put forth by the board.

For the first time, the Grass Valley Police Department will be charging the fair for the department’s time in handling traffic control.

Scofield also had planned to upgrade the utilities along Treat Street, the thoroughfare of nonprofit food vendors considered by many as the fair’s biggest attraction.

Those upgrades will now be put on hold until 2006, he said.
