Sierra Foothills Audubon Society speaker addresses land management plans

At the April 4 meeting of the Sierra Foothills Audubon Society, Don Rivenes will provide an update on existing and citizen-proposed wildernesses with photos of hikes you can take in the Tahoe National Forest to these areas. He will also discuss Forest Service plans underway for revising the 11 Sierra national forests land management plans and how the revisions may affect inventoried roadless areas that are the basis for future wilderness. Wilderness designation is the strongest and most permanent protection from development that our laws offer for wild federal public lands, and the public needs to be involved in advocating for this protection. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the community room at Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City.

The big birthday celebration is just a year away! The Wilderness Act will turn 50 Sept. 3, 2014, and celebrations around the country will mark this major American cultural and environmental achievement.

During 2013 and 2014, we plan to have our own local anniversary celebration with scheduled hikes into nearby wilderness and proposed wilderness areas. We will keep you posted in the chapter newsletter and on the chapter website as these hikes are scheduled. For information, visit
